In honor of iconic photographer Douglas Kirkland's 80th birthday today, I've posted this never-before-seen black and white portrait I took of him last year.

I'm so honored to have had the chance to learn from Douglas and also photograph him. Nearing the end of the first day of his weekend photography course at the Vancouver Photography Workshop, I asked him if I could take his picture. He was surprised I wanted to photograph him, considering we had two models available. He happily accepted my request and just like that I had a legend in front of my lens.
Another student witnessed this and jumped in on it as well, but hey, at least I earned the moment for myself and didn't piggyback someone else's opportunity lol.
Whenever I'm feeling unfocused or defeated in my work, I listen to the recording of him critiquing my portfolio to help bring me back on track. I learned a lot from Douglas and I hope to meet with him again in the near future.
